The high school gymnasium floor has a new name.
The Chillicothe City School District announced that on Friday, December 13th, 2024, it will honor a former CHS basketball coach and athletic director by naming the floor of the Ellis B. Hatton Memorial Gymnasium “Thomas M. Cuppett Court.”
The late Thomas M. Cuppett served as head coach of the boys' basketball team from 1969 to 1981 and as athletic director until his retirement in 1993. His 25 years of service to the district include a career coaching record of 404-151-2 and numerous honors.
"Mr. Cuppett was inducted into the CHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Ohio Capital Conference Athletic Administrators Hall of Fame in 1998," said the Chillicothe City School District in a press release issued by CHS AD Knute Bonner. "Additionally, Mr. Cuppett is a member of the Salem International University Athletic Hall of Fame and received the Lifetime Achievement induction in 2004, the Salem College Alumni Association Football Hall of Fame inducted in 2011 and received the Chillicothe Education Association Educator Emeritus in 2003."
Cuppett passed away in October of 2020 at the age of 81.
The dedication ceremony will take place at approximately 7 p.m., December 13th, during the Cavaliers' home opener against Hillsboro.
